The Transylvanian Community College 2001 is about to begin!

We are looking forward to welcome 50 young Europeans from about 22 European states on June 24th in Székelyudvarhely/ Odorheiu Secuiesc/ Oderhellen, Romania! The aim of the course is -in accordance with the general aims of the ACC- to stimulate a common European debate on questions and political problems shared by the Europeans. The Transylvanian Community College deals with the future perspectives of the Central-Eastern-European minorities in the context of the EU enlargement. The course developed for Transylvania is going to be a showcase of the general strategy of the ACC, creating more Community colleges for an Open Europe. The TCC is also going to be an excellent way for young NGO-members to create new contacts and to start working independent of borders. We are thinking of not only borders between states, but also the mental borders between the European populations, language groups, cultures and nations. The programme is prepared with lectures, excursions, socializing games and workshops. The boarding school format is supposed to make discussions much more serious, since it is our experience, that living, eating, discussing and learning together under the very same roof is simply stimulating and guaranteeing the efficacy of debates. Through this, we expect the participants to obtain an understanding of and a respect for the European diversity. This is after all the goal of the whole course: the boarding school format is aimed at contributing to the participants' forming a special community. Though the program is new, there have been many applications and this increased considerably the competitiveness. We prefer to have as many populations/groups/cultures/regions/nations as possible represented, also opting for 50/50% East/West and 50/50% males/females. There will be 22 states and an even larger number of important NGOs represented.

East-West Exchange/Sandas fantastic arrangement

From April 16th-22nd 10 young Danes sent by the ACC International programme office took part in the project "East-West" together with citizens of Latvia and Finland. The main objectives of the project "East - West" was to promote knowledge, understanding and discussion of the coming enlargement of the European Union by looking at different perception of this issue from the side of the member and non-member states. Your humble editor did not receive a report from participants or organizers yet, so lets come back to it later. Informal reporting unanimously says though, that Sanda Serafinovica (main organizer, representing both Klubs Maja /JEF-LV and the ACC), has done a great job and succesfully carried the project through. Participants are very satisfied, and I guess we have approximately 10 new members ;-)

Postponement of the Macedonia Community College

The situation in Macedonia made organizer Mjellma Mehmeti (representing our cooperator the Association for Emanicipation, Solidarity and Equality of Women as well as the ACC) postpone the Macedonia Community College (MCC) to September 12th - 19th. The situation in Macedonia is difficult to foresee, and there is not much more to do than hoping for a more stabil situation in near future.

Cooperation with Minority Course 2002

The ACC is going to cooperate on the Minority Course 2002, which is going to take place in summer 2002 at the Højskolen Østersøen, Aabenraa, Denmark. The idea of the course is to bring young Europeans together for a debate on a common European issue. In 2002 the theme next to minority issues is "European governance". The programme is fully in line with the purpose of the ACC of bringing about European Community Colleges with the aim of developing further a European debating public. ACC will contribute during the 3rd week of the Minority Course 2002, the "governance through activism" week, by lecturing and organising workshops on the issues of activism and civil society in a European context.
